Plattco Bearing Shelf
Summer 2022
Overview
In addition to my work on Plattco Corporation's proprietary dry material handling valves during the summer of 2022, I designed a shelf to make a storage system for the valve bearings that would make the bearings easily accessible to workers and to the person that was assigned to count inventory monthly.
The bearings also had to be sorted by size and brand, since they were purchased through consignment.
The eight shelf units were identical and were built into an existing shelf that the bearings were previously stored on in boxes.
Design advantages
The main advantage of my design was the use of heaving-duty drawer slides to support the weight of the shelf. The drawer slides chosen also had an integrated latch on the side to lock the shelf in the extended or retracted position.
I designed the shelf with a pegboard pattern and metal hooks to support the bearings. Additionally, the front of the shelf was set at an angle to keep the bearings from falling off while opening or closing the drawer.
Space was included behind the face of the shelf to store excess boxes of bearings when the hooks on the face were full.
